Tire Failure,

"I installed a set of the above tires on a tandem axle boat trailer to replace the four existing tires which were 17 years old. I rarely tow the boat since we live on a lake. A few months after the purchase we towed the boat 200 miles and on the home journey one of the back tires disintegrated on the I 385. Nothing was left except perhaps 1.5" of rubber attached to the each side of the rim. One of our 17 yr. old tires was kept as a spare, installed and got us home. The load rating is 1710 lb / tire and the boat and trailer weight is only about 4400 lbs (1100 lbs / tire) and they were inflated close to the maximum pressure stated on the sidewall. Hopefully this was simply one defective tire as the other 3 appeared to be fine but I have little confidence in them now. I am not certain how far we drove with the 4400 lbs on the 3 tires )1466 lb / tire but they held it. I have recently contacted Northern Tool and I am waiting their response. Hopefully they will take care of the situation. I am planning to tow the boat that same route again in the spring, but wonder if one spare is sufficient?"
