"We are a broadcast station and in a building where the HVAC system was not designed for sectioned off rooms and lots of heat generating equipment. The problem was our main control room, under which the central a/c could keep us about 85 degrees unhappy, year round.. We are in a basement, so there are no windows. This kept us from taking care of the problem for years. Finally an affordable, powerful unit (this one) came along. We are using it in a rather unique way, that is to supplement an existing air handling system. We have to vent it into the central return, for which I had to purchase a longer length exhaust hose with insulating foil and fiberglass insulation, as that port is on the ceiling. I know you're not supposed to use more than that supplied, but it must be remembered that the central retun has "pull" on it like a vacuum so I figured it might work.. I figured correctly. I have been able to get that control room down to a brisk 69 degrees, supplementing the central HVAC instead of 80-85. We keep it at about 72-75 degrees. The problems we have with the unit are, again, unique to us. The unit is not silent, so we must take special mesaures with the microphones to try and keep it out of the "sound". Some operators opt to suffer with it off rather than deal with the air-noise. They are the minority. The other problem we have is that the flexible exhaust vent goes right in front of part of our CD library so program producers must work 'around' it. Again, that's unique to our application. The room that it is supplementing is about 20 x 20. It's a fairly large room with much heat generating equipment. Naturally, you must close the studio door for best performance. Some operators do, some do not. With the door not closed it keeps the temp about 75, which is comfortable. I feel it was a great purchase, and solved a long-standing problem. I really have no criticisms except that we have no use for the heating function. I have not been able to set the clock on it either, despite my best efforts to follow the instructions. Makes no difference; we dont use the clock or timer. Our control room temperature problem is now solved."
