Great concept sort of,

"I bought these along with the 30 ton splitter. Yes, they do work as indicated in the picture, but the resulting wood is rather small. It is ok for making kindling from the right size wood but if the log is too large or twisted, the wings tend to chew the wood instead of split it. The 30 ton splitter is fast enough with 2 operators not to need these. Also, they did not come with a 3/8 inch hex wrench for installation and I did not happen to have one. For the price of these you would think they could throw one in. If I had it to do over I would save the money spent on these."

Who would have thought ?,

"When I first looked at this, I thought "that won't work, it will just get stuck in the log". Actually, not at all. When I finally added the wings to my new splitter, I was very pleased with the results. My productivity doubled. Not quadrupled, since you now have more pieces flying in more directions at a faster rate, all to coral and stack. I first thought "well I'll just try it, then unbolt it and get on with my splitting pile", its now a permanent addition to the splitter. This product is a great idea, simple change that installed easily, and stays there working hard throughout the day."

So-So Wedge Wings,
July 5, 2007
By JasonB
from Suffield, CT

"I bought these with the #1114 splitter. They looked like a good idea. However, my disappointment started right out of the box. The bolts weren't quite long enough; the nylon ring on the lock-nut was not even engaged. I started splitting some big chunks of wood and found the wedge wings consistently getting stuck. I had to cycle the ram all the way back to dislodge the wood. Then you end up with two small pieces of wood and two large ones. Also, the top two pieces tend to pop off with a good amount of force. I had one piece go a good 10 feet. They do work well for wood around 10" in diameter though. I try to segregate the pieces I'd use the wings for and the ones I won't to save time. In all, I do not feel the wings are worth the hassle."

"This is an awesome addition to the splitter. Reduces the time spent out in the cold by hours!
You know mamma's got to have her fire! I can get the wood I need split and be back before she gets cold.
That's gotta be worth several points..."

Northstar wedge wings,
March 8, 2007
By Qdawg
from Alberta, Canada
|
"I put the wings on my Northstar 30 ton splitter. I found the first couple of times that the split sections on the bottom are lodged into the splitter which requires backing the splitter all the way back to free the log taking more times. I've since just lifted the log 1/2 inch before the splitter makes contacts and have had no problems."

NorthStar Wedge Wings for Log Splitter,
February 15, 2007
By Kidd
from Illinois
|
"I bought these wings with my NorthStar 30 ton splitter. I have a mess of black locust that I wanted to split. Some of these logs were 24" -28" diameter, and some smaller. My splitter had a hard time getting through most of these logs with the wings on the splitter (big and small). The wings want to wedge the log between the ram plate on the splitter and between the wing its self. This will really drag down the splitter. When the log would split without wedging, it would "pop" the log in four pieces (on the smaller logs). When the log pops, there is no telling where the outside pieces will go. I had one piece of split wood bounce off of my shin, that was enough. I took the wings off after about an hours time. They do tell you to stand behind the wheel of the splitter while splitting, in the owners manual for this reason. I believe these wings would work great on logs 10"-12". With the larger logs, you will end up with some big and small pieces. These wings do make the splitting go faster as they said they would, if you are splitting a consistant size log (10-12"). On logs that are bigger than that, I would just take them off as I did. With the wings off, you can make the wood any size you want, but will have to split it more times. These wings might work well on softer wood, but didn't like that black locust. Watch out for the poping logs while splitting the hardwoods. I will try the wings again if I am going to split softer wood, but will leave them off while splitting the hardwoods."
