MOUNTAINEER CUTS HEATING BILL ALOT!,
August 25, 2008
By ERNIE125from Northeastern Pennsylvania
"The Mountaineer is a great woodburning stove and especially for the price, I never would have expected it to be as good as it is. We decided to attempt to use a wood burner to help allieviate some of our heating bill, we never guessed that this stove would save us well over 75% last winter(07-08) We relied heavily upon this unit and were never disappointed by it! That in and of itself was amazing being that it cost only a fraction of many other store bought models. The craftmanship is of the same high quality as the higher priced models and although it is in our basement we surely would have not been afraid for a moment to have it in one of the upstairs rooms, it does look that good! The Mountaineer not only saved us a lot of money, it easily paid for itself in our eyes the very first season! We are currently looking to add another unit to our upstairs for times when an extra bit of heat is needed in the dead of winter, it will certainly be this one, that is how good this unit is!"

pretty good for the money,

"This stove puts out great heat and is calming to watch through the viewing door. The only downside is that this stove burns very fast. It will not burn more than 3 hours on a full load. For the money though it is a good value."

Cozy but not to big,
April 16, 2008
By cozy1from Northern VT
"We really like the glass front door and it never turned black like other models! It is easy to get started, and to clean the ashes. The only problem is our house is so big that it just didn't put off enough heat. Great for 1000sq ft, but no more."

Mountaineer wood burner,
February 24, 2008
By Griz911from Grand Rapids Mi.
"The wood burner we purchased from you last fall has the following deficienies and or safety issues: Has left soot, dust and ash all over everything. Lets smoke out when you try to refuel it. We had to relocate our smoke detectors. Allows hot ashes to drop from door ledge when refueling."

bad decision on purchasing a wood stove,
February 12, 2008
By Holcombfrom Muncy ,Pa
"This did not meet any of the specifications. I had to feed it every two hours and it could not heat a room 12x24. A very poor blower system. The fire box is to small to burn more than two hours"

The Mountaineer has an unfortunate design flaw,
February 5, 2008
By Kindlerfrom Hanover, NM
"In many ways this stove is everything you could want, with a beautiful ceramic glass door, fire brick lining, easy clean out ash tray and beautiful styling. All great features, But, it smokes. You can't open the door, even slowly and cautiously, without smoke pouring out. Close examination showed that mine has an almost closed baffle which is 8 1/2 inches horizontally by 5 1/2 vertically. The only way for smoke to get into the flue pipe is through the 1 inch openings at both ends of that baffle. Vogelzang's engineer says that is sufficient. He could be right. But, the baffle is almost an inch Lower than the door opening. Heat and smoke find the easiest way out and unfortunately, that's through the open door. I had to open doors and windows almost everytime I put in more wood. No fun. Sorry, this design just doesn't work. That baffle also prevents full loading of the stove because it takes up so much room at the back of the firebox as if the smoking wasn't enough!
My Mountaineer went back to Northern - One of the Best Companies in America."

"This stove was easy to put together and burns hot. The stove does go through wood quick. The stove has a large fire box and will take big logs that burn for a long time. Overall good product."

Great stove for the money.,
January 21, 2008
By Builderfrom Southern Maryland
"I bought the Vogelzang-Mountaineer stove in Dec. 08. Delivery was in three business days, right to my door. This stove requires assembly of the pedestal, electric blower and rear shield. Be patient when you put this stove together. The instructions are less than adequate (-1 star). Other than that, the Mountaineer works great and is a very nice stove for the money."
