Giant Killer!!,
May 16, 2008
By RoosterCogburn

"I've just finished the 5 hour break-in period, and have split 10 cords of wood!! Nothing has stopped it yet! I've have rolled some very large knotty twisted chunks ,(drops from a slasher),onto the splitter and it has drove through them with ease. It's almost unbelievabe when you first see this little splitter to think it can do what it does. I can't possibly concieve why anyone would need something bigger! This splitter comes Highly Recomended!! Make sure to change the oil at the first 5 hour recomendation!! When I changed it, the oil was pretty dark already, and looking into the oil in the sun was like looking into a pail of wet metalic paint. This thing is a gas sipper also, 2-1/2 hours on a tank of gas which is only .48 gallon!! This little splitter is a Giant Killer!!!!"

Best little firewood splitter,
April 27, 2008
By Robshaus

"Have used my NorthStar horizontal splitter for a year after using an older model for 10 years. I have pictures of it splitting 30" dia. x 18" long hard maple bolts. The 5 hp Honda engine is the easiest starting, quietest, smoothest running engine I have ever used. And powerful enough to split anything I can roll onto the bed. If you heat with wood and split your own, this is the splitter to own. At 81 years I split a cord a day of red oak or hard maple with this splitter."

"This 5 hp-20 ton is a real workhorse. We've split some 24" diameter oak and maple with verry little resistance. Works at a comfortable speed and it's size makes it easy to store. It is easy to move around and pretty quiet. Would highly recomend this product for the seriouse wood burning home."

"We purchased our log splitter a couple of years ago, it's been a great timesaver as well as saving our backs! we've had no problems at all and have raved to all our friends about how quick and easy it is to use. our friends and even our neighbors always want to borrow it, we've given a few of them the Northern catalog when it comes in the mail so they can check it out themselves."

"This was my first purchase from Northern Tool and my 20 ton log splitter works great. In the first two weeks i got almost two cords of wood split without any problems. I'll probably do three to four cords of wood a year, i recommend this product to any homeowner. Price was great and easy to move around if needed. thank you Northen Tool. chuck a."

"After 40 cords of wood still going strong. Very quite to have so much power. I have yet to find a piece of wood that it cannot split. The wedge has been twisted attempting to find one, gotta love hydraulics. One reliable and easy starting machine. Pretty good on Gas as well."

Built Like A Tank,

"I originally considered getting a log splitter that tipped up to split logs vertically. I'm glad I didn't... The simple design of this horizontal splitter with few moving parts makes it cheaper and tough. I haven't found a log that it won't split yet!"

Great Machine,

"I'm totally impressed with this splitter, right from the quality of materials to the workmanship. The Honda starts and runs like a top. Of all the pieces I split only one slowed it down and it was one you wouldn't even attempt with an axe. An afforable, well built machine."

Earning its Keep, and Then Some,
October 29, 2007
By gnorrie

"This is one of the best items I have bought from Northern Tool. As a wood splitter, it is durable, easy for one guy to run once you 'get-into-the-groove', starts easy and runs well. I have split oaks, maples, birches, fruit wood, and some mystery trees, and nothing have I loaded remained un-split. The red maple was the worst of the lot, and even though there were some scary moments, it bulled through it all. I use a metal wedge under the ram side of the log if it jams on the stationary wedge, but I very rarely resort to it. I use a 4-way splitter (different product different review) for more seasoned wood and this machine hardly works up a sweat. IMPORTANT! if you use the 4-way wedge Make Sure You Stop the Piston Before It Bottoms Out! Failure to do so will mess up your 4-way wedge. It is fine on the original wedge. The return and auto-reset is a real time saver. The machine is a bit heavy, but I can move it by myself without herniating anything valuable. Between me and my buddies, we have probably gone through 12+ cords ( one year or so ownership), with plenty more to go. This machine has the spirit to do the work. Not overly noisy, not stinky smoky, really doesn't take up too much storage space, and is moderate on the fuel consumption. Decent materials and construction, without cursing myself, not even a flat tire. My 2 regrets, I wish I bought it sooner. I was using a wheel-spinner cone-shape thing that went on my old jeep and I kept making do with that, until I got rid of the jeep. Second, The log lifter would have been nice, but I couldn't afford that model. I would love to see it as an affordable retro-fit kit, or I may take it on myself to home-brew one. Also, maybe an un-jamming wedge could be included with the splitter? (huh? huh?) ; ) The staff was just super patient with me on my questions pre-buy (and I had Very Many!). The shipping was super quick and reasonable for half-way across the land. It shipped pre-assembled ( well, I think I had to install the lever part) and with the hydraulic fluid in it (surprising, but sure saved time and bucks not getting it myself). Brought it home from the truck receiving dock in the back of my SportTrac (a short bed), and used it the next day. Not horrible on maintenance needs. Yeah, I like it much. I'll post again next year. Cheers!"
