IR Model SS3L3 Compressor,
January 14, 2008
By Wildirishmanfrom Hampden, ME
"I have been considering purchasing a large compressor for quite some time. Recently I bought a needle scaler Item # 15763. This is a awesome tool and works great. But... my compressor was not up to the task. I would get a few impulses from the gun and then have to wait until the compressor kicked off again. The project took considerably longer than it should have. This compressor is awesome. Hugh air capacity, quiet running, mega CFM, and no more waiting for air. It is a USA made product. A beautiful unit, mounted on a pallet with all kinds of packaging materials for damage free transport. Very simple to hook up. IR customer service will email you a drawing so you can pre-drill your anchors to mount the compressor before your delivery date. Great service. If you register your compressor "on-line" you get an extra 30 day warranty. And with Northern Tool's offer of a Gift Card and Free Shipping, it made the cost even more attractive. I would highly recommend this unit."

Nice System,
October 15, 2007
By Boleyfrom Picayune, MS
"I ordered this for my son-in-law's meat packing business to operate high speed hand tools. The specs called for 90PSI @ 11 CFM, so we weren't sure if the 10.3 rating would cut it, but it has worked very well. We purchased based on the name brand recognition as much as the specs. The large tank makes a good buffer and the compressor recovers pressure rapidly. The unit runs smooth and relatively quite compared to some other systems I have been around. Quality Construction. The tank drain is only accessible from the front of the unit and the belt drive is only accessible from the rear, so be careful of the positioning. We had to set it at angle near a wall to be able to access both."

really quiet,
October 9, 2007
By brinkfrom florida
"this compressor is really quiet! if noise is a concern this is the way to go. The compressor is very well made. It's a little more expensive than the brands from the local discount stores but after comparing them to an ingersol rand it's definitely worth a little more money. the pump fills the tank fast and does'nt get extremely hot like others i've used. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a quiet, reliable compressor that you can have confidence in to not fail in the middle of an important job such as painting."

Buying a quality compressor,
July 18, 2007
By SkydiverToddfrom SF Bay Area, CA
"I've been working on old cars for a number of years now, and I have a stock 1929 Chevrolet Coupe and a 1931 Chevy Victoria that I am turning into a street rod. My last compressor died in the middle of trying to repaint a couple fenders, after only six years of occasional use. I spent a long time researching compressors both online and with friends I trusted, I wanted a quality compressor that would last me a lifetime. I looked not only at reviews, but also on used equipment sites that sell items from businesses upgrading or selling off assets after going out of business. One name was almost always listed for the compressor that had been in the hands of the professionals--Ingersoll-Rand. Not just the air compressor for the local car shop, but also the heavy equipment rolling behind trucks on major construction sites. I couldn't find a bad review for their equipment anywhere. All of it seemed to be made in the U.S.A. and there were plenty of local service centers. The cost of this 60 gallon compressor was more than I had originally planned, but my wife argued that I would likely never buy another compressor after this one, so it was cheap in that regard. Freight delivery of the compressor found it well packaged on a small pallet, protected by cardboard corners. No scratches, dents or dings. Once I wired it up and got oil into it, I went through the recommended start-up procedure: 1/2 an hour running without letting it build pressure and then close the valves and let it operate normally. My first impression was how quiet it was. When I went inside, my wife asked if I had the compressor running, she thought she could hear something, but wasn't sure. My last compressor let the neighborhood know when it was on. The constant 1/2 hour on the motor got it warm, but not so hot it might burn you on contact. Warnings are posted about the heat, I was only surprised it didn't get hotter. Once I let it fill, it kicked off exactly at 135 psi, as advertised. The tank is big enough to allow me to do anything, and the high CFM's can even let me sandblast at 90psi without a worry of having to wait for the tank to refill after two or three minutes of blasting. The motor is rated for 100% duty cycle, so there's no issue when drawing maximum air out of the compressor. In the end, my only complaint is a minor one--the opening at the bottom of the tank for the drain valve is too small for my big meat hooks to fit through easily. Compared to a noisy compressor that died after scant use, this thing is a dream and I'll deal with the one nuisance."

Value versus low cost,
July 11, 2007
By Idafleigfrom Spring, TX
"I haven't had much time to use my IR compressor yet, but so far this compressor has been superb. IR's reputation worldwide and their quality manufacturing sold me on this compressor rather than cheaper ones at nearby home improvement stores."
