THe best splitter In the World,
November 19, 2006

"I have used this splitter for over 200 hours and have not hat to repair anything. All i do is tow it to the wood pile start it up (it starts on the first pull) and start cutting. it has plenty of power to split any size log into any size piece of firewood. i have used the four way wedge and strongly reccomend it. The commercial grade 9.5 horse power engine is amazing it gets great gass mileage and will cut forever without running out of fuel.
The best splitter for your money"

"easy assembly. Great splitting power, can split knotted hickory 4ways without a problem. In 6months and about 40 cords of wood I only had a problem with the hydro filter housing which was quickly resolved. North star Customer service is very good and knowledgable."

Not a good 4-way setup,
May 4, 2008
By Petey123

"First off let me say that I own two horizontal/vertical log splitters and have recently built a log splitter with a 4-way wedge system on it. However, the 4-way wedge is on the end of the beam with a pusher plate is installed on the piston end of the system. The 4-way works flawlessly but is a free floating (not fixed) design, which ensures correct operation of the 4-way setup. The other two have only a fixed single wedge on the piston end of the system and a foot on the opposite end as does the North Star systems. Now, the North Star system works well and is built durable as long as you use it with the single wedge design. However, the North Star systems include an option to bolt on two wedges to now turn the system into what they claim is "three times faster" system. In reality the system performs nearly twice as slow or better. The reason I make such a strong statement is because if you are splitting a log of 10" diameter or bigger nearly every pass you make results in a log jam. What I mean by a "log jam" is that the two split pieces under the bolt on wings becomes lodged under the wings and in order to remove them you must completely return the piston to home, where the two lodged piece are removed by the dislogger on the machine. In addition to wasting time and money (on labor) the macine is constantly under alot of unneccessary pressure during spliting and removal of the lodged wood. Which will most likely wear parts out prematurely. If your looking to increase production or save time look for a system that has the four way wedge on the end of the beam because this design which the claim is three times faster is anything but that."

37 Ton Splitter,

"I love my splitter, I purchased the four way splitters with my unit, they work well on 12" or smaller wood but not on large wood. If i was buying another I would still buy the four-ways but only for convience sake. I love the way it starts and runs. I have used it two winters with no problems. I have a Machine Shop and have worked with hydraulics for many years (in business for 48 years) and have helped quite a few guys build them a splitter, however I chose to buy rarher than build after I looked at the 37 Ton unit. A great buy, and worth every penney."

How to split wood as a pro.,
April 21, 2008
By Woodchopper

"I have used this machine hard for 2 seasons. Even the toughest wood and wood with knots and hard pieces don't even make the motor labor. Cycle time is just right too. I heat my house and a large shop here in Pennsylvania with wood, so I go through a lot. Previously I have rented a well known brand, and would often have to cut the knotty pieces with a saw to use them, or not use them at all. The ability to go from verticle to horizontal is a great feature also. Wood that is too heavy to lift can be rolled into position for the first split. I usually split all the big pieces in half so they can be handled, then switch to horizontal mode. I have yet to find a piece of wood that can't be split. Even a solid oak knot is no problem. When the wedge is moving, no matter what, you better be ready to catch at least two pieces. Maintenance is a snap too. I replaced the grease fittings with the 90 degree type so you can give each a couple of squirts without having to feel around underneath when the table is in the horizontal position. I also use dry graphite spray lube generously, and my machine shows no signs of wear at all. This is what I would expect from Northern, since log splitters and hydraulic components were all they sold when they first started business 25 years ago. certainly by far the best commercial splitteron the market for the money!!"

Powerful but has some drawbacks....,
April 21, 2008

"This machine is a beast! It doesn't have trouble splitting even the biggest log which I can lift. Furthermore, the idle down is a nice feature which which helps reduce fuel consumption. Fuel consumption is minimal! -Easy to setup/operate The drawbacks are in its design: -if a log is stuck to the wedge and it retracts there is a good chance that it will damage the fuel tank. I've put about three dents in my tank. To prevent future problems I welded a shield that helps to prevent damage to the tank -when splitting large logs and you get many large pieces it would be nice if the cratel racks would be bigger so that you didn't need to keep bending over to pickup and resplit logs"

Great Machine,
February 14, 2008
By JMor

"This is a great log splitter. I have noticed a few drawbacks that should have been considered by engineers. First, if you choose to purchase the 4 way wedge (like I did) you will likely see some major problems fast! The major problem is that if you have a log say 20" around and split it four ways in one split you have done something!!! Bull. You now have to very small sticks of fire wood and two very large stcks. Second, once you have split this log you have 4 sticks of wood being retracted (because they are still stuck together) and once retracted to the return position you will likely find that one of the smaller sticks under the 4 way wedge is actually WEDGED between the frame and the hydraulic arm. Now this poses a serious problem. Why? Because that annoying pice that is essentially welded between the frame and is not in a position to catch the stop retract Ram (which this piece of wood) ironically bypasses and yep you guessed it goes right for the BRAND NEW ENGINE's GAS TANK. I now have a major dent in a brandnew gas tank. Moerover this stick of wood that is too small to burn any wy takes a sledge hammer and a good vebal conversation with to be removed once you finally remove the annoying levithon then you are back in business (you think) You grab up your two large pieces and place one on the bench and yep you got it again, this 4 way wedge not only splits this piece into 4 tooth picks but the two under the wedge are for ever more plugged up and you are back to square one. You wind up with 6 sticks of sub par splits and a lot of aggrivation and time. TAKE OFF THE 4 WAY WEDGE AND YOU HAVE A WONDEFUL MACHINE!"

Northstar 37 ton splitter,
February 12, 2008
By OUFootball1

"This is the best splitter I have owned. My other splitter was a small 22 ton, 5hp model and it final wore out. I was going to get another within the same range but decided to spend a little more to upgrade and am happy I did so. This splitter will split anything you put to it and doesn't bog down at all. When I first received the splitter the control valve did not work right. Contacted Northstar and they sent me a new control in less than 4 days."

"I bought this machine this last fall and have yet to find anything that will stop it. Ive had 40inch wide x 25inch long oak and hickory in it and doesent even faze it. It starts on the first pull and the idle feature really saves gas. No one should be dissapointed with this machine!"
