For anyone that has split wood by hand,
March 7, 2007

"This is a life saver I have split wood by hand for my intire life spending days spliting enough wood for the season. After using this I kick myself for wasting my time and energy for so many years. Now I can split enough for myself and my father in a single weekend. With 30 ton of pressure its powerful enough to split even the toughest seasoned wood with the greatest of ease."

NorthStar Log Splitter - 30 Ton, 5.5 HP,
July 5, 2008
By RHJ53

"A great machine! Splits anything you can get to the platform. It had no trouble splitting the triple fork from a 100 year old oak. I can now split far faster than I can cut. The machine is heavy duty and built to split. It is also heavy and requires at least two to assemble. Plan on mechanical assistance to unload from the delivery truck! The Honda starts effortlessly and has plenty of power. In 10 cords, I have yet to have the engine break a sweat! The engine has been running at about 2.5 cords to the tank. For what it is, this machine is quiet. The only thing I am unhappy about is that I waited so long to get the machine!"

Good value, would buy again,

"A great tool for the money. I looked at a lot of different splitters before I pulled the trigger on this one. What a machine it is. No regrets here.
Thoughts: 1) It is very heavy, a result of being very solidly built. Have a helper when you go to unpack it and assemble it. 2) The Honda motor starts on the first pull and runs well and quietly. The idle down feature is nice, but took a little bit of fooling around with to get it adjusted right. No big deal though. 3) I purchased the 4 way wedge wings, but I would not recommend this option. When the splitter goes into the log, the horizontal wings push the split pieces down (and up obviously) and it causes a binding action against the beam.
I had only a couple minor issues
1) The return fitting on the tank leaked (only a minor drip). I had to drain the tank, take off the wheel and teflon tape and plumber putty the fitting to stop the drip. Not a big deal.
2) I was surprised that none of the bolts that hold the very heavy beam/cylinder assy to the trailer were hardened. I didn't like the thought of junk bolts holding the assy together as I will need to trailer the unit down the road on occasion. I replaced them all with grade 8 bolts at a cost of about . No big deal.
3) There was a minor hydraulic leak on the valve assembly that I couldn't get to stop. I called Northern and they gave me Northstar's phone number. Northstar was very helpful. They sent me an entire new valve assembly even though probably just a new cap piece would have solved the problem. They also threw in 2.5 gallons of hydraulic fluid for my troubles. Thanks!
The only other thing I might do to it is remove the log holders on each side and use the mounting brackets to hold a small table on each side. This would make splitting larger pieces easier as the tables would catch the pieces that need to be rotated and hit again.
I also may pick up the fenders since the first time I trailered it down the road, It was wet out and the machine got pretty filthy."

"I have only had this splitter for a few weeks so I cannot speak to its longevity. However, this is the monster of log splitters and has busted anything I've thrown at it! I love its features especially the Honda engine and the idle control! I can't imagine why anyone would need a bigger splitter!! Way to go with this tool! Worry not about long life, this thing is built very heavy and ready for years of work!"

30 Ton Log spliter,
April 23, 2008

"I have been using the 30 ton log splitter for over a year now and have split up to 7 cords of wood with it with out any down time at all other than daily maintance. The return time of the hydraulic system is great and the hydraulic power is good enough to split a 24" piece of hickory or oak. The 5.5 horsepower Honda engine starts on the first pull everytime and runs for hours with out any worries. I am really happy with this log splitter and it has made my life a lot easier. Larry"

"This baby's a workhorse. I use it on my own property, and have split cord upon cord of seasoned and green oak, eucalyptus, and pine. The Honda engine consistently starts on the first pull, and the machine works exactly as advertised. This one is a keeper!"

30 Ton log splitter,
January 17, 2008
By OakHill

"I just purchased this splitter. I was able to easily follow the assembly instructions and with a chain and hoist was able to assemble it myself, even though they recommend help. The beam is extremely heavy. The only thing not included was the hydraulic fluid. It was only for 2 - 5 gallon buckets at the Co-op. The Honda engine cranked on the first pull. This is a very powerful splitter. I did purchase and attach the wedge wings. I think they are OK if you want some smaller starter wood but I will probably take them off for most of my splitting. I was able to split even twisted oak and elm easily. The only tool I did not have for assembly was the 3/8" hex wrench to put the wings on. You would think they would include one for the price of the wings."

Awesome Power - good recylce time,

"Goes through wood like a hot knife through butter even with the optional Wedge Wings installed. Only negative is the pressure hose should be about 1 to 2 inches longer to eliminate any chaffing possibilities."
