Dewalt Cordless: Choosing the right battery size,
April 22, 2008

"The 14.4 volt drill is an excellent tool that I have used for well over 6 years. It has very good torque and battery life, is relatively compact, and the only job that has been too much for it was drilling into masonry (ok, I should have used a hammer drill from the get-go). I have also used the 12 Volt and 18 volt drills; they are all great tools, but here are some thoughts to consider when buying: how much torque will you need? The 12 volt model will work well for nearly all household tasks, but if you will be drilling large diameter holes, etc., you may want a 14.4 or 18 volt model. I bought the 12 volt for my daughter: she and my wife love it because it fits their hands much better than the 14.4. I recommend visiting a hardware store and holding the tool before ordering online. The weight of the three tools can become an issue, and is the reason I use the 14.4 as my primary tool. For me, the 18 volt drill is too heavy when doing things like hanging blinds and window treatments in a new house all day. The 12 volt is lightest of the 3 and also fits into the smallest spaces. Finally, consider battery compatibility: Dewalt has far more tools that use the 18 volt battery than the 14.4 or 12 volt. If you want to share batteries among a laser level, reciprocating saw, etc., you may want to go with the 18 Volt."

"I have had my drill for sometime and I just put it to THE test. I just completed a 16 x 16 room, I used my drill to install the drywall, god only knows how many screws were used to put up the drywall, having two batteries was just the ticket, by the time one was running down the other would be ready to go. I have had other drills, but this one was the best."

"I had purchased this drill about 1-year ago, and I take it EVERYWHERE I GO. You never know when this handy tool will come in handy. It is very versatile and reliable, and I find it keeps a charge pretty long. I use it around the home often, and also at my job (auto body technician). THANKS TO DEWALT!!"

"The power, torque, and longevity of the battery is more impressive than all the 'other' brands that I've tried with 18 volts or more! I cannot give any higher of a recomendation than the one I've given here except to say that the only 'step up one can make from the 14.4 Dewalt power drill, would be the 18 volt Dewalt power drill. That said, if you're the kind of user that needs lots of power with as little weight as you can get away with, I strongly recomend the Dewalt 14.4 volt hand drill, hands down!"

"I have had my Dewalt 14.4V cordless drill for about 5 years, doing various little weekend projects around the house and on my truck and that little thing is still going strong! i havent even had to replace the batteries yet. and it is so much more capable than my dad's drill which is an 18 volt drill of another brand i won't mention (craftsman). probably the best drill for the money as far as i can see."
