    Slow Starter,

"This Grinder /Sander works well enough but starts slowly due to the sanding belt mechanism. Sometimes it needs a little push on the belt to help it get started. I would think that would put stress on the motor."

    Does the job,

"For the price, it is a good combination. The sander portion does get stuck easily, but one you learn to adjust the tension, it isn't bad. Great for sharpening and sanding w/o the need for an additional item on the workbench."

You get what you pay for...,

"Combination belt sander and 6 inch grinder? Cool idea!
Pros: Cheap, powerful, versatile, seems like it will last a lifetime.
Cons: Setup instructions far from intuitive, Sanding belt needs some adjustment to get it running right, but after adjustments its bulletproof, doesnt like to start in the cold, needs to get up to speed before and torque builds up, sanding belt causes a bit of vibration. Belts are not a standard size
Overall: its a space saver, but if you have the space and $$ for a dual wheel grinder and a belt/disc sander, go with the two separates."

    Good value with some adjustments,

"From reading the other reviewer comments as of today, you either hate it or love it: Either it gets a 4 or 5, or a 1. There's no 2 or 3 stars. I can see why people don't like it - the manufacturing is less than perfect and the belt sander will probably need your attention to get it right (and the instructions don't really tell you how).
Note that if the belt isn't lined up properly and it's rubbing on the side, the motor will have a hard time starting. I don't think these motors are made to have a lot of torque at the low RPM's. What you may need to do if it doesn't start is first loosen the spring (the larger hex nut on bottom of the spring, note the small one underneath the larger hex nut holds the bolt w/ spring in place - there's no need to loosen this one). And then adjust the phillips screw which adjusts the angle of the top wheel.
You could also take the right side of sanding unit off, (uses metric fasteners), learn how it works, straighten any parts that don't look to be true, and put it back together / adjust it / loosen the spring. I had to do this first hand because I didn't know how to adjust the tension and angle, and the instruction manual I received didn't tell me how - it just gave a diagram of all the parts.
Note, that if you want a true 90 deg sanding, you'll probably want to create your own sanding base, maybe out of wood. The included base is flimsy and doesn't attach very securely, there's just one small bolt on the left side of the sanding belt - of course that's not going to work real well.
I recommend this product to the DIY's who wants a multi-purpose tool for a reasonable price."

"The belt is adjusted, with a tension nut on the side if the vertical assy does ot bend. I use a few L brackets , some ready rod, turn buckel to keep it stable.
This keeps the belt centered to the drive and idle spool. China engeering at its min. cost effective.

"Got to line up the sanding belt properly but unit is great for the home handymen or even for the professional if grinding and sanding is an occasional need. I use it at home and find it to be great for my needs."

    Tough little grinder,

"I have had this grinder in the back of my shoeing rig for two plus years now. It has been exposed to all maner of weather extremes, went through a truck wreck and was thrown all over the place, it still works like a dream, better than some of my bigger grinders in my shop. I have been very pleased with it's performance. With a good grit sanding belt, it eats right through metal."

    Disappointment,
    January 21, 2008
    By GarageDweller
    from Conowingo, MD
"This product was a disappointment as soon as the box was opened. I received pre-stripped screws and a adjustment knob that was not willing to work for anyone. Still unable to get the sander to work for more than one job at a time before the belt locks up, won't stay in line. The cheap metal guides are more of a hindrance then useful. Little more agitating is that Northern doesn't sell replacement belts for this product even if you do get it working. I would not recommend this to you."
