"I *had* to move a 1200 lb safe upstairs. The stairs were far too narrow and had a 90 degree landing. The professional safe mover laughed his butt off when I told him what I wanted. I ordered this winch, had it shipped to my local Northern Tool. I cut a hole in the ceiling and built a brace and cross brace in the attic to hold this lift. A pair of doubled up 2x12's on edge held up one end, and a 2x12x4ft box, supported by 2x8's to spread the load over 80 or 90 sq ft of attic held up the other end. When the hoist arrived, and I opened it, the heavy duty nature of it's construction caused me to upgrade my steel mounting beam from 2" sq tubing (3/16" thick) to 3" sq tubing (3/16" thick)
Funny thing was, this hoist came with 39 ft of cable, and a 5 ft long control wire/cable, but no 34 ft ladder to stand on to lift anything from ground level. I replaced the 16 ga 4-conductor wire/cable with 12 feet of 14 ga 4-conductor cable. Long enough to reach down from the attic to the 2nd floor balcony.
Safety first, particularily my own, so I waited until the wife was out of town, and had the safe guy bring the safe in the front door, we wrapped it with a 2-ton sling in one direction, and a 3 ton tow strap (w/hooks) in the other. Doubled up the lift cable with the included hook-n-pulley, hooked it up, and hit the button.
The hoist performed flawlessly. It could easily have lifted two safes. The motor did not strain or bog down in the least. Slid right up the ramp/guides I had built, over the spot where the railing used to be, swung out over the main part of the balcony. It Locked securely when I took my finger off the button. Then I lowered it into place.
The hoist is a heck of a deal for the price, and costs practically nothing compared to a unit that could have failed, and punched that expensive safe through the marble floor. Or compared to what could have happened to my back if we had tried to grunt it up there with a manual come-a-long.
I left it mounted in the attic. Built and framed a nice little attic door, painted to match. Still gotta get the wrought iron railing up there. (To replace the wood ones I cut out), and the game room is begging for a snooker table. A man's gotta have goals......"
