Works for my purpose,
November 2, 2009
By grandpajohn

"I did read the poor reviews of this item, but for the amount of logging I do, I was not willing to pay too high a price for other tongs, and I felt these would be something I could work with.
I planned to sharpen them, but haven't got around to it yet...not really needed.
Yes, they were stiff to open and close when new, but after a half day of work, they are fine.
The hook/eye is a perfect fit for most of my logging chains. It also fits on a particular clevis I use, so there has been no problem there.
The tool is made of heavy material, and I haven't been able to bend/break it yet (after about 2 years). I agree that it is not an example of top quality toolmaking, but it suits my needs, is low priced, and looks like it will last."

143995 skidding tongs,
September 10, 2009
By Len

"hook is too small for chain, points are not pointed in the right direction to pick up material, does not open well, a very poor tool, not typical of the items Northern sells. I wish I had read the reviews on this product before I bought it. The reciews of it being a poor product are all true. I would return, it but it is 75 miles to your store"

"LIGHT DUTY SKIDDING TONGS, MAY WORK WELL FOR OCASSIONAL USE... NOT GOOD FOR LIFTING OLD RAILROAD TIES. DO NOT THING THE ANGLE IS RIGHT ON THE POINTS, DID NOT BITE INTO THE LOG OR TIE!"

Could be better,
March 16, 2009
By jnang

"These tongs would probably be fine if they were anything like what is shown in the picture. Unfortunately, the tips do not hook back upwards as shown, but point straight in - plus they are VERY dull. Furthermore, the slot in the hook is way to narrow (about the width of a pencil) to fit on any reasonably sized chain. I returned them and got the larger size #19795 - they are much better."

skidding tongs,
November 21, 2008
By dei4ever03

"This did not grab a hold of the log very well. the points are dull and rounded, and I feel like i was lied to, because they are not pointed like the picture shows. They would probably grab better if the points were like in the picture. I tried hammering the tongs into the log and this did not help at all. not please at all."

Work good using quick hitch,
November 20, 2008
By BlazerEngineer

"I had these for about 3 years. At first I tried them with a chain from the drawbar and they would not stay hooked. The points are too straight and not real sharp. Later I tried them with a short chain attached to the top link hook on a quick hitch and in that configuration they work great."

Great Price!,
November 17, 2008
By Anonymous

"Can't beat the price! Fast s/h in box. Built strong and painted well.
I used them with a gin pole on my Masey 35 tractor to lift or drag storm damaged trees out of my yard to a disposal site by the street. Cut trees in ten foot lengths (up to 20 inch diameter). I taped a lite cord to the tongs so I could open them without dismounting the tractor. They release automatically when the log weight is let down.
I recomend them!"

Does not perform,
August 21, 2008
By MEfirewoodcutter
from Maine
|
"Purchased this product to skid logs out of woods. Points are dull, round and do not point as picture illustrates. Did not hold logs for long or at all. Very frustrating to stop and re-attach to log. Tried pounding points into log with hammer, but did not improve hold. Gave up and tossed on wood pile. Would not buy again or recommend."

Tongs don't grip,
August 13, 2008
By millman
from Western WA
|
"These tongs are strong but arrived dull, the angle of the spikes are pointed to far down so they don't get a good bite. It takes two people to use them, one on the equipment and one to pound the spikes into the log with a sledge."
