Price and Quality,

"Surprised us by arriving ahead of scheduled delivery date. The trucker placed the 300 lb. splitter right in the garage. Thought I would have to take it from the tailgate.
As others have noted, the instructions are somewhat vague, but after a little careful thought you can figure it out. In the end, the assembly went reasonably well and it was helpful having 2 sets of hands working on it. I did order the hydraulic fluid, as well from Northern, but that shipped via UPS from another site, arriving several days after the splitter, thus stalling the usage of the splitter by those several days. Thought they would ship together.
Where the Powerhorse shines is not in the assembly but in the operation. Once together, the engine started on the first pull. That was a pleasant surprise. My neighbor and I split a year's worth of wood in a couple hours. The Powerhorse even took care of the stingiest, gnarliest, grained Sweet Gum rounds you'd ever want to see. These would nearly kill you splitting with a maul. After a couple of days, we rechecked the hydraulic fittings and did have to tighten one elbow and there was a slight leak on the plastic elbow on the wheel base where we rewrapped with teflon tape, which took care of that issue.
The only reason for not giving the Powerhorse a five star rating is for the less than stellar assembly instructions."

Very responsive customer service,

"When I received my 13 Ton splitter and spent 3 hours assembing it (probably took longer then normal due to a recent eye surgery) I had no hydraulic pressure whatsoever... After consulting with the techs it was discovered that I was not alone and that the manufactuer of the motor (NOT Powerhorse) which includes the Hydraulic pump had installed several pumps on180 degrees opposite which reversed the inlet/outflow pressure... A simple repair that I did myself in just a few minutes and it worked perfectly. I must add that the techs and supervisors were as surprised as I was and quite concerned and very, very responsive and made absolutely sure that I was a happy customer So far my splitter works great. I have split 10 pickup loads of wood in just 2 weeks and not a whimper from my unit! I love the dual action ram and the log cradles work very well plus it uses hardly any gas! A great unit for the price. Only negative design aspect I can see is that the hydraulic control valve is bolted to a shield that is adjacent to the port side cradle - a odd shaped log could (and has on mine) push against the shield and bend it back towards the rear of the unit. Not a bit of damage to the unit and now that it has been bent it is much more out of the way. I don't intend to bend it back... Finally I have to recommend the high speed wheel kit - I installed it on mine and in addition to gaining high speed towing capaility it gives another few inches of ground clearance and a great 2" ball hitch with safetly chains. Good job Powerhorse!!"

nice product,

"I picked my 13 ton powerhorse on Friday... put it together on Saturday. Engine started on the first pull. No leaks, no problems. I split a few logs to try it out and it worked fine. I'll give it a real workout in a couple of weeks.
A few comments for someone purchasing this logsplitter:
* I followed the advice of other reviews and used teflon tape on all the threaded hose connectors.
* My only complaint is the instructions weren't clear on what tools are needed. 3/4 of the way through assembly I realized I needed a 9/16 allen wrench and had to run around town to find one. It would have been nice to know that before I started.
* Its really advisable to have a helper as some of the parts are fairly heavy and need to be help in place by one guy while the other threads the bolts/nuts in place.
Other than that, I'm impressed with the quality.
Happy logsplitting."

Notes on assembly.,

"Assembly took me a bit longer -- about 3 hours -- and if you are a solo home handyman -- a second set of hands would help in the first phase until the wheels are on and the unit standing free. These are heavy units. I think the manual diagrams could be better, but that always seems to be the case these days. Also, the shipping plugs for the connections on the hydraulic unit are a bit difficult to free up when you go to hook up the lines -- I was able to back them of abit until loose using a table vice to hold the cast portion of the unit and some channel locks. Oils and gas fill ups this week and from all accounts she will be great."

Powerhorse Horizontal Log Splitter - 13 ton,
March 18, 2009

"Have had & used this product since Oct 08. This Senior Senile Citizen still requires wood as supplemental heat and splitting by sledge & wedge is just about out of the question now. After much research I decided to go with the Powerhorse 13 ton. Talked with the Northern Tool Representatives and felt very comfortable with them & their Newly Developed Made In USA Unit.
It's two-way splitting action is ingenious. Worked flawlessly for me and was able to split through up to 18" dia & up to 18" long logs without any problems other than lifting them up on the platform. Keep in mind there is some assembly required and this machine is not made cheaply. It is sturdy & has some weight to it. It would of been nice if you have a helper or just someone around in case you do.
I couldn't be happier all the way around on this deal. Northern Tool was truly a customer's dream to deal with. Ordered was processed, shipped & received in just a few days. Very cost effective if you're in the market for an Quality Log Splitter. Excellent Guarantee comes with it Also. Check out the Video on Northern's Site or on Youtube I believe? For me this Splitter made my day."

Perfect for a wood burning stove,
March 16, 2009
By JimCT

"This log splitter has been great. It is light and compact which makes it easy to move around with a garden tractor or even by hand. It starts easily and the motor runs quietly. The most noise comes from some vibration at either end of the hydraulic cylinder. One day I'll figure out a way to add some spring washers to the securing pins. The best feature of this splitter is that it splits in either direction. So you don't have to wait for the cylinder to retract each time. I also like the log trays that attach to both sides of the splitter knife. They make loading and unloading wood much easier and keep you from dropping wood on your toes. It's maximum log length is 18" which is perfect for wood stoves. If it were larger, you would end up with some logs that won't fit your wood stove. And the price is great considering how well made this splitter is."

Powerhorse Horizontal Log Splitter — 13 Ton, 6.5 H,
March 16, 2009
By Buckets
from Maine

"After visiting our well know nationally local area buisnesses that deal with home improvements / home equipment sales..finding a log splitter that I could use without the assistance of my husband, I was dissatisfied with their "outragages pricing" of a wood splitter for our - my needs. After doing much web searches, I finally found one to fit our needs in both pricing and wood spilting features. Theirs didn't have the large holding cradle nor did theirs have the capability of splitting wood forwards and backwards. This is a wonderful feature that the others don't have and it has saveds us time in the lifting/splitting of the wood. My mother of 76 years, she isn't afraid to jump right in there and also join in the "fun" of helping split the wood. The Powerhorse Horizontal Log Splitter — 13 Ton, 6.5 HP has saved us alot of back breaking / axe welding time in splitting...and to save a few fingers or two in the process. We are deeply SATISIFIED with this Powerhorse Horizontal Log Splitter — 13 Ton, 6.5 HP product and have reccomended this product to friends."
