"After our local chain sharpener closed shop I purchased this tool. I no longer have to use blades until they are shot. Sharpening is quick and easy and I always have several sharp chains ready in my shop. Even the neighbors come by to use my sharpener. Maybe I should charge them a fee!"

"I cut my own firewood. At times it is muddy when the wood is skidded out. This results in a lot of dirt in the wood. When sawing the wood it doesn't take long before the chain is dull and will not cut. I prviously would need to drive 12 miles to a local shop to get my chains sharpened. I now can do it at home. I have 5 spare chains so when they all become dull I set my Oregon sharpener up in a vise and sharpen the chains. It sets up very easy and is very easy to operate. In no time I have my chains sharpened and can go back to work. A real time saver for me."

"I had never sharpened a chain before I bought this grinder. It cost me $3.00 a chain and the trouble of going to the shop. Then waiting for it to be sharpened.
This grinder is so easy to use any one could read the book and be shapening chains within an hour. This product saves me both time and money. I have found my chains stay sharp longer and cut better than before. It was well worth the price."

A Fine Little Tool,

"I got one of these to see if I could refurbish about 30 chains my son uses in his firewood business. I followed the instructions and set it up in about ten minutes, then experimented with the first chain. Within about five minutes, I had the process down and started grinding chains as I had time. So far I have reground ten of those chains to "good as new" condition, saving about $25 per chain over throwing them out. The unit is easy to use, fairly straightforward to set up and does a fine job grinding chains. I will have paid for the grinder by the time I have gone through the pile of dull chains on my bench. I would recommend getting a spare grinding wheel if you plan on doing as many chains as I am doing, since they do wear a tiny bit with every chain. Well worth the price."

"I should have bought this or something similar to it decades ago. Once one gets set up to sharpen a particular type of chain, it's great. That is sometimes time consuming because the book only gives the setup adjustments for Oregon chains.....you have to figure out just what you have otherwise. I don't fault Oregon though, as it's not their responiblility to help you sharpen a competitors chain. I would make the chain stop adjustment knob locking portion a little larger for ease and leverage. I would also make the chain stop just slightly narrower. A narrower chain stop would allow one to sharpen the teeth down on the chain all the way to being useless. My particular chain type (91V) would result in the optional 1/8" grinding wheel striking the chain stop when you have sharpened the chain teeth almost as far as they would still function. This is a minor point, and I could certainly modify the chain stop to accomplish this. The shield guard screw should be replaced with a wingnut arrangment for a quicker changeout and durability of the fastener. When one has removed the shild 100 times, I expect the fastening screw will begin to fit losely in the plastic threads. Be carefull not to tighten it much, or the plastic threads may strip out. The manual is very well illustrated with photographs and clear instructions, but it says on page #7, "This grinder is equiped with an electric cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and grounding plug that looks like the plug illustrated in Figure B." Figure B shows a three prong plug. This grinder comes with a simple two prong plug which is fine with me, but not what they promise. No depth guage setting tool is included. Since nearly all chains need to have the depth guages set at 0.030 or 0.025, they ought to just include a depth guage setting tool for 0.030 and be done with it. There is no need to be concerned with 1000ths of an inch. I later bought one packaged with a flat file for $5. I had to purchase the optional 1/8" grinding wheel for my chains, so that left the 3/16" wheel that came with the grinder. I ended up using the 3/16" wheel to be my "modified shape" depth guage grinding wheel. The manual suggests you purchace a 1/4" wheel for this purpose but I'm getting by without it.........though I have to be more careful when I adjust that wheel to grind the chain depth guages."

"I received this product promptly. I found out after receiving it that the grinding angle is set permanently at 60 degrees and that the chain holder is set permanently at zero degrees. This may work in most cases, but not in my case. Nothing is said about this on Northern's information page for this product. As a result, I returned it. I suggested to Northern's customer service that it would be helpful to have the owner's manual available as it is on the cheaper sharpener #193020. Another point is that the wheel guard has to be removed each time the wheel is changed. The wheel guard is attached kind of cheaply and does not seem like it would be able to last a lot of changes. Because I returned it, I cannot rate the product based on use. I did purchase the next higher model, 511a, and it is about twice as heavy in weight and with the adjustments that I need. I would like to say that Northern's Customer Service was exceptionally great."
