best fo the money,

"I put away about 100 cords of wood a year and this chain sharpener is the only tool used to take care of about 20 chains. The greatest thing is that you are in control of angle's and depth of the sharpener. It has paid for it self time and time again. For the money this is the best thing I have ever purchased. There are more expencive machines out there but I don't believe any better."

Saw sharpener,
August 11, 2008
By rltgt

"I bought this sharpener last fall, after years of sharping chains by hand I was amazed at how quick and accurate the sharpener was. I looked at several sharpeners before I settled on this one. I have it mounted to my work bench and it was a breeze to setup. I would recommend this sharpener to anyone."

chain saw charpener,

By whiskey

"I heat my house with wood. I have been hand sharping my chain saws for years and have been fighting my saw on my larger cuts. I should have bought this sharpener years ago. After I sharpen my saw its like a new chain and cuts straight and easy. Having a sharp blade cuts down on my cut time and frustration time. I highly recomd this product."

Northern Industrial Saw Chain Sharpener,
November 4, 2009
By RickinAL
from Just south of Birmingham

"As soon as you place an order for this chain sharpener go to "O's" ( the other guys) website and download the instruction manual for the 511A; the Northern sharpener is identical but the manual is poorly written and leaves you with more questions than answers.
When I received my Northern sharpener I put it together and got ready to try it out and found the instructions to be dismal. After I downloaded the 511A manual I was able to figure out how to set the vise tilt angle although I was still having difficulties. Then I realized that there was some metal from the casting process on the bottom side of the base that kept the chain vise from rotating properly. After smoothing this out with my grinder it works OK now.
I sharpened my first chain which was old and in horrible shape. I could hardly wait to try it out. When I did, I found that it didn't slice through the tree like hot butter so back to the drawing board I went. After another sharpening, and this time I filed the depth gauge on the chain, I was out to try it again. It was still not like a new chain but it was a major improvement. Remember I started out with a worn out chain (which I recommend for the first time using this new tool). There is definitely a learning curve albeit a short one.
I had two more chains to sharpen and even better results. I'm not a total klutz with tools but the practice did improve the results I got.
The motor runs smooth and I did not have any issues with the motor running out of power (I have a friend who bought a $39 sharpener that runs out of steam).
I haven't had a need to use it after sharpening my three chains but based on my experience so far I am happy with my purchase. I would probably have given it a 4-1/2 star rating because of the fit and finish but that wasn't an option so I rated it a five. I haven't seen the competitors 511A other than pictures so I don't have a hands on comparison. But for the difference in price I am happy with the Northern. I hope I am still happy a year from now since I really hate trying to cut with a dull chain."

Chain saw sharperner,
November 3, 2009
By bobtaildriver

"I purchased this item, to help save me time and saw chains, I can't believe what it has done for me. It has not only saving me time on sharpening chains, even though I have to take the chain off off the saw, it is going to make my chains last longer. Before when I sharpened my chains, which I did to the best of my ability, I would eventually end up with missed filed chains and then would have problems cutting evenly or even getting them to cut at all. With this sharpener, I have taken 3 chains, that I felt were no longer usable and sharpened them and are now usable again. I no longer have to rely on a friend, professional logger, to spend time resharpening my chains, that I have messed up. There were some chains, that it would take him a number of filings to get them right again."

Back to the old grind,
November 2, 2009
By NorseHorse

"We heat with wood and saw a lot of firewood in a year. Both at our shop and at home. We were in need of a chain sharpener that was easy to use and also economical. We found it in this tool. We had an old cheapie sharpener that worked only part of the time and usually did more harm than good. This tool works very well and all the time. We have even started sharpening chains for some of our customers. Thanks for another great Northern product."

sharpener review,

"I cut a fair amount of firewood and trees for logging and was not happy with the commercial companies that sharpened my chains previously and decided to try a unit to do it myself. I bought this sharpener and am very pleased with it. It is fairly easy to adjust for each chain tooth variation and allows me to take very light grinds so that I get more sharpenings than before and they cut straight. The unit has paid for itself several times."

Just as good as the name brands,

"I lead a disaster relief chainsaw team and this sharpener sees a lot of use when we are out on a response or training exercise. It easily holds its own with other sharpeners at a fraction of the cost. That is a big deal when we are trying to stretch donations as far as we can."

Northern Industrial Bench or Wall-Mount Saw Chain,
November 2, 2009
By birdstone
from Indiana

"I thought it easy to put together and simple to set up. The most difficult part was reading the small print for the particular chains being sharpened. The edge is true and repeatable. I usually get all the chains to one saw together and alternate sharpening the edges to take even less time on setting up. I cut, use, or sell about 8-9 cords a year."
