Northern 4051 Tank w/Modifications
"I used this tank in my large-scale model locomotive's propulsion system. To get it to fit, I ended up narrowing the 16 inch dimension to 14-1/2 inches to clear the locomotive's hood. I also removed the mounting feet because they would have been prone to cracking from vibration. I made new mounts that engaged the sides of the tank as well as the bottom.
To support the return line filter (also a Northern product), I made a mounting bracket and welded same to the tank. See attached picture.
Pros:
* Sturdy construction. * Combination filler cap and vent. * Ample-sized suction and return ports. * Good port placement. * Plenty of surface area to dissipate heat.
Cons:
* Poor mounting foot design. * Bare steel—it should be primed at the factory."

Destine to leak!,August 19, 2009
By Smokey66from Westwood, CA
"I purchased this tank about 15 years ago, I spit approximately 8 cords a year and about 5 years ago, the bracket welds on both sides of the tank started to slowly leak. It has now reached the point that I am going to have to repair it. It is going to be a hassle to repair it, the oil has to be drained and there isn't a drain plug, hydraulic fittings have to be broken loose and I am going to have to hire a welder to repair it. The tank should have been designed better."

7 Gallon Hydraulic Oil Tank,March 9, 2007
By Firemist1from Poulsbo, Washington
"I was very impressed with the quality, construction and features of this tank. This was a replacement for one I had been using for 15 years and it fit perfectly with only a slight change to the pipe routing."
