52 inch rough cut trail mower,
October 19, 2009

"I had trouble with the mower right away, a bearing on the cutter blade spindel had not been put in right and it blew apart the firs time i tried to cut with it. i took the item to a dealer who repaired it in 4 days which was great, but i had to drive a total 72 miles at 11 mpg with my truck and trailor, i wasn't to happy about that. The trail mower is advertised that it will cut up to 3inch brush, it will but with great diffucalty, It kills the engine a lot, and if you loosen the belt so it will slip before killing the engine it won't mow very well, but now that I have everthing adjusted to the way i think it should be it works great !! with only the stall problem if you go to fast in heavy stuff, I believe that this would be the aultamit machine if it had a 22 hp engine . Overall I would rate this machine as great, i have mowed over 4 1/2 achers of tall grass 5 ft and cat tails also. Thank You Denis"

mowing pasture,

"the product was delivered with a crack in the plastic housing near the air filter caused by the trucking company. i started to mow pasture that was not mowed for at least 12 years with great sucess. my initial four hours has been flawless. it is necessary to progress slowly, about 2 or 3 miles per hour but with that in mind the unit has enough hp to level through some pretty tough stuff. i raised the mower to the highest cutting level for the initial turn at the pasture and found the results quite good. other than a tractor, 3 point hitch and a brush hog i do not think that you will do better."

"This a very sturdy machine which is why I was so dissapointed with its performance. Initially it would disengage when entering the area to mowed. After several phone calls, and two or three suggestions, it was clear that customer support was lacking. Finally got the clutch to stay engaged and then found that mower was not able to cut my grass. Had to hire a man with a tractor to cut my field. Cost three hundred dollars. Will probablt try to cut the grass now that it is short ."

30 Hours of rough and tough initial use,
May 28, 2008

"I purchased a 52" Swisher rough cut tow behind this spring and have now logged some 30 hours of operation. I offer the following feedback from this experience.
I am quite impressed with the power available from this machine and have tested it on grass far deeper and denser than most would consider tackling with a tow behind. I have tightened the belt tensioner a couple of times, but no evidence of need for belt replacement anytime soon.
Early in operation I did encounter a problem with slippage in the drive train. This turned out to be the result of inadequate torque on the vertical shaft which connects the driven pulley and the blade. Once torqued to manufacturers spec (235 ft-lbs) it has provided no additional trouble.
Another initial problem was also attributed to inadequate torque at initial installation. One of the 3/4" grade 8 bolts that connect the deck to the carriage vibrated out and was lost. When replacing, several others were found to be less tight than desired. Once properly tightened, all have stayed in place.
One relatively minor design flaw was noted, which was interferrence between a gussett and the mower deck flange. As shipped, this prevented raising up the mower deck to its highest cutting position. Problem was resolved by grinding away a relatively small portion of the rear deck flange. I would expect that Swisher has likely identified and resolved this problem by now and it will not effect future units.
One final note regarding towing this mower. This is a heavy piece of equipment and creates quite a bit of drag when pulling through high grass. I use a Honda Rancher(TRX420)and following this 30 hours of mowing, all but the last 4" of the exhaust is now blue from heat. I would hesitate to use this mower behind an air cooled ATV.
All and all I have no regret over purchasing this equipment and would recommend it to others."

Swisher Trail Cutter modelRTB18552,

"This equipment performed well on the first time mowing of approximately 8 acres of grass ,alfalfa, weeds, elm tree saplings and cattails. It had enough power and handled the uneven fields well and I was able to mow closer to the fences and ditches than before. This mower is a heavy, well built piece of equipment but requires caution when turning because of the 4 wheel design it is necessary to swing wide with caution when making turns."
