RDS Auxiliary Fuel Tank/Toolbox Combo,
July 13, 2009
By Maverick50
"Very easy to install, wish it had mounting rails rather than tabs. Tool box is very handy to have. I use the tank with the Diesel Install Kit for Auxiliary Diesel Fuel Tanks. Gravity feed is a cheap inexpensive way to go. A lot of tank sales say it is illegal to gravity feed. They should read the law. It is perfectly legal; you just cannot feed directly into the carburetor or directly into the fuel injectors."

fit our needs,

"We bought a chev. diesel and found they put a very small fuel tank in certain models. <30gal. We have now installed the 51 gal aux tank in 2 duramax 2500's and cost was much less than g.m.'s after fit & have a tool box also.
The install kit works good . The fuel gauge gets confussed at times untill you are running only on main tank. Just check the aux . tank gauge --as the main tank will remain full untill aux is depleted.

Almost perfect.,

"The Model #71784, RDS, 51 Gallon Aux Fuel Tank & Toolbox Combo is a most convenient marriage. We're now traveling with a 34Ft. 5th wheel RV & it's most helpful to pass up some fueling stops due to inadequate manuvering room, out of order pumps, high prices, bad weather, long lines on holidays, etc.
Using a good quality [$40] electric fuel pump [gas or oil], attached to frame rail, to transfer contents into main tank via "tee" connection available from Northern Tool. Transfer flow is low, but 30 minutes on a long road trip no big deal.
Pro's:
--The bright finish reflects most heat from the sun & stays cool [if clean]
--tool box is perfect for tow strap, flares, road hazard kit, socket & wrench set, etc
--fits a 6.5Ft. truck bed nicely, leaving storage room on each side to accomodate spare bottles & jugs of antifreeeze, oil, fuel treatment, windshield cleaner, large wheel chocks, etc.
--top is just under the bed rails, thus looks neat & doesn't protrude.
--has dual release handles, so can be opened from either side of truck
Con's:
--the fuel nozzel does not have a mating oval hole in the tank, thus only automotive size nozzels fit. A distinct disadvantage at truck stops, where two nozzels are available.
--the latch assy. is not robust; loosens after some miles, thus latches unpredictably at times if adjustment nut/bolts are not checked for tightness
----fits a Dodge Ram 6.5Ft. truck bed between the wheel wells, leaving room on each side. If this design were a few inches shallower [frt to bk], it would hold nearly 90 gallons instead of 50 gallons. This is more important than incidental storage if your primary goal was to carry additional fuel.

Fuel Tank/ Tool Box Combo,
October 30, 2007

"Fit, finish and welding all top quality. Lid seals tightly yeilding a good weatherproof seal. I would have preferred to have the filler cap to be inside the lockable toolbox lid along side the fuel guage which I have found to be very accurate. Overall a great product at a good price."

Excellent tank,

"Could have used better documentation, but never the less it was easy to install.
The neck is too small for many of the truck stop filler nozzles. But you can't walk away from this or your liable to get a bed full of diesel. I have an 06 K 3500 Chevy diesel and it's nice to pass up the expensive fuel and continue on to a cheaper state or station.

Fuel Tanks,
July 9, 2007

"I really like the fuel tank that I purchased. Its well built and well designed. The only thing I did not like is the manufacturer did not take the time to mount the pads even on both ends and did not mount the pad in the center in the rear. Other than that I would recommend these tanks to anyone."

"Good tool box and good fuel tank. However whether thru installation problems or something the fuel only drains out down to 1/4th full. Could be a problem with installation kit."
