Great Little Mixer, July 22, 2009

"This is a great little mixer for the decorative vertical concrete I do. Easy cleanup and not really any wasted material. I would say that you have to pay close attention to the mixer when mixing "dry" (not alot of water) batches of concrete for vertical mixes as in what I use. This is only because the drier the mix, the more clumping to one side of the mixer tends to get. Still, I'd definatley reccomend this mixer."

Northern Portable Poly Drum Cement Mixer, November 18, 2008

"This mixer is made to dump cement onto the ground. It is not tall enough to dump into a wheel barrow. It is gear-driven by an electric motor and the gears must be kept free of debris and also greased (not mentioned in my owner's manual). When this mixer is loaded moving it around on an uneven surface is not easy because the mixer is somewhat top-heavy. It is best to mix the load at the location that you want to dump it. Also, the metal mixing paddles in the drum must be cleaned thoroughly after use and then lubricated to help prevent rusting. Leaving cement on the paddles and not lubricating them after each use will greatly shorten their life.
Overall, I like the mixer and recommend it for small jobs when you do not have to move the batch after mixing to a location where you do not have access to electric power."

"I needed a mixer I could get to deep-woods camp. This little unit fit the bill...

The mixer blades come pre-mounted inside the drum, but I was suspicious of the construction. So I filled it with water & let it sit a little. Sure enough it leaked around a few of the bolt holes. Not a serious problem, but I decided to fix it anyway. I took the bolts & leather washers out, added some rtv silicone, & put it back together. This worked fine.

Incidentally, UPS clearly dropped the box, which bent two of the five motor mounting bolts. These are not heavy bolts, & I worried that staightening them would break them, but this didn't happen. Otherwise, assembly was pretty easy.

I put it to work right away, mixing batches almost continually the first day. It is unlikely that you would need to run it so hard, but if you do, I would recommend letting the motor cool about 15 minutes for every 60 of on-time, as the fins get excessively hot under such use.

Since then I use it more sparingly, but it remains reliable. The gearbox does sound a little louder -- a little dry -- now. But there is no grease fitting. I may open it up sometime out of curiosity; if I do I'll add a section to this review.

Summary: For a light-duty unit it's held up quite well."
